Over the past several years, cases of heartworm disease in Colorado have been steadily increasing.   Heartworms are parasites that live in the heart, where they can cause permanent damage; even death.  They affect the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys by interfering with blood flow to the organs.

The parasite is transmitted by mosquitoes.  Increased risk factors include:

 1. More time outdoors equates to more mosquito exposure

 2. Living near mosquito infested areas close to irrigation ditches, lakes, stagnant water, etc.

 3. Living in or traveling through heartworm areas.

The good news is that your pet can be easily protected against heartworm disease as well as many types of internal parasites with one medication.  Our veterinarian can perform a simple blood screening to ensure the parasite is not present, and then prescribe a once-a-month preventive medicine.  Also, prevention is safer and more economical than treatment, which can pose serious health risks and side effects.

During March and April, we offer a 10% discount on the heartworm test.  Please feel free to contact us for more information:  719-632-6111; email:  westsideanimalhospitalpc@gmail.com
